Upgrading via Ross Tech's web site looks like a rip off. I have been tempted to purchase it as it is convenient to use with a Android device but unfortunately, my phone is a Apple iPhone.Click to expand.I checked out upgrading a while ago, and you are better off buying a new one and selling your existing HEX-USB+CAN privately. I don't know, if I have helped or not but those are my thoughts, as a long time user of VCDS and not a user of OBDEleven but things, I have heard about, researching it online. ![]() Lastly, I think, if you bought either tool and decided, you didn't like it, you could probably get your money back by reselling it or purchase it, off of amazon, which would give you a decent return window. Like many things, it has a learning curve but there is allot of info on their site and videos on youtube showing you have to do things, because it is so widely adopted by VAG repair shops and enthusiasts. It may not look as slick or look more "current" and attempt to be more user friendly, like OBDEleven, because it is so new but it is more of a "ain't broke don't fix it" mentality with the program interface. Needless to say, VCDS by Ross Tech is a more pro based and straightforward solution. This seems to be a way, that the developers are trying to generate more revenue which makes sense, since sub $100, the system is pretty cheap. You might want to watch the OBDEleven videos by Deutsche Auto Parts, which is the primary distributor of OBDEleven in North America, he explains, more of the features and how the "extras" cost more or you can "earn" more of these features. ![]() Each has its pros/cons I don't know, if there is a "perfect" scan tool for everything but VCDS or OBDEleven, are probably the most popular solutions right now.Īnother thing, is OBDEleven, has a opt in extra payment system that allows, you to access easy ways to change soft coding settings, that allow newer cars to change things like how the blinkers work or how the speedo cluster displays things. On the other hand, if you want a solid/mature product that has many years, being the #1 VAG based scan tool, used by the independent VAG repair shops all over the world and supporting the VAG enthusiast community, Ross Tech is the way to go. So, if you want to try a newer product that uses Android but realize, there maybe "growing pains" form a new company/software/app, on the other side of the world, it maybe something to give a try. I have heard mixed reviews on the software itself (a new product that seems to be improving, as time goes on) and support, has been similar. OBDEleven is based out of easter europe they have a support site and email based support. They have a solid USA based support phone number and for registered users, support forums, that are actively answered and I have even, had the founder/owner Uwe, help me with issues, when I was working on swapping a speedo cluster in my new beetle. ![]() This is where Ross Tech really shines my VCDS from 2007, has had free software updates, constantly and I can even scan the latest VW's and Audi's. The value of this product, has been amazing to have a factory level scanner is very helpful for repairs and there just aren't many factory level clone tools like this, at this price or with such great support. If you had a Snapon scanner one probably, would have upgraded the scanner a number of times and spent thousands of dollars in software upgrades, in between the scanner trade ins/upgrades. The free updates and the fact that my VCDS cable is STILL compatible after 11 years is amazing, within the automotive repair industry. Like many things that are tech related these days the BIG thing, that sets a product apart from others, is the after sales tech support and maturity of the product/company. ![]() The main benefits of OBDEleven, seem to be the price is about 1/2 of VCDS, it runs on a android portable device, like a phone or tablet and it doesn't have a limit, on the amount of cars you can scan with it.ĭo you have a Android device or a Windows based pc/tablet/phone? Obviously, buying a Android device these days is pretty cheap but that would add to the price of your OBDEleven setup. I do not have OBDeleven but I have had VCDS by Ross Tech since 2007.
